Cancer is a cruel and relentless disease, and yet, it's a battle that some fight with incredible resilience and strength. Brett Harman's story is a testament to this, and it's one that deserves to be heard.
A Cancer Survivor's Tale: From Diagnosis to Devastation
Brett, a 35-year-old dad and professional voice actor, has had his fair share of encounters with cancer. In 2015, at just 27 years old, he was diagnosed with leukemia. It was a shocking revelation, brought on by persistent back pain and infections. The diagnosis forced him into aggressive chemotherapy, a battle he fought valiantly, achieving remission within four months. But little did he know, this was just the beginning of a long and arduous journey.
The Cancer That Wouldn't Quit
Fast forward to 2021, and Brett's life took an unexpected turn. His fiancée, Hannah Stinson, discovered she had sarcoma while pregnant with their daughter, Summer. Despite the challenges, their baby girl was born healthy, albeit a few weeks premature. However, the relief was short-lived as two years later, Hannah's battle with cancer came to an end. She passed away aged 29, just before her 30th birthday, leaving Brett to raise their daughter alone.
A Different Perspective on Cancer
Here's where it gets controversial: Brett refers to his leukemia diagnosis as the "best bad thing" to happen to him. It's a bold statement, but one that highlights the resilience and growth that can come from facing such adversity. He credits his cancer journey with giving him the strength to tackle the unimaginable loss of his fiancée.
The Power of Resilience
In the years following his remission, Brett returned to work and planned a future with Hannah, his sweetheart from their teenage years. They worked together at Domino's Pizza, and their love story was one for the books. When Hannah fell pregnant, they were overjoyed, but their happiness was soon overshadowed by the discovery of an unusual lump on Hannah's leg. It was BCOR sarcoma, a cancer of the soft tissue, and the couple faced the daunting task of ensuring both mother and baby would survive the pregnancy.
A Fight for Survival
The medical team pulled out all the stops, administering chemotherapy while ensuring Hannah could carry their baby to full term. It was a delicate balance, but they managed it. The baby was induced in December, slightly earlier than expected, but healthy. Once Summer was born, the focus shifted to Hannah's recovery. She achieved remission and underwent surgery to remove dead tissue from her leg. As a nurse, she understood the treatment process intimately and handled it all with grace and courage.
A Devastating Turn
As the couple planned their wedding and a move to a bigger home, tragedy struck again. Hannah fell ill at work, experiencing crippling abdominal pains. Tests revealed the cancer had returned, and this time, it was aggressive. Doctors were honest, telling them that the focus would be on extending Hannah's life rather than reversing the disease's course. On October 31 of the same year, Hannah passed away from complications and sepsis.
A Promise to Keep
Recalling Hannah's bravery, Brett shared, "She was the most incredibly brave person you'll ever meet. She never complained about her treatment or pain. I did when I went through it, but she never did. It was remarkable. So brave." Before she was placed on a ventilator, Hannah's last words to Brett were, "Look after our little girl." It's a promise he takes seriously, spending every day of his life trying to honor it.
"I have to be a single dad now, looking after a four-year-old and doing all the things a dad and a mum would do. But it's made me grow as a person. I'm proud of myself. It's been over a year since she passed, and if I could give any advice to others grieving, it's that it does get easier. At the early stage, you don't think you'll get through it, but you do."
Challenging the Cancer Narrative
Brett's story is a powerful one, and he's using his platform to challenge the way cancer is perceived. He's involved in the "Part of the Story" campaign, which reimagines Sherlock Holmes navigating a cancer diagnosis. Brett narrates an audiobook titled "The Adventure of the Silent Hiss," exploring how Holmes' life and relationships are affected by his diagnosis. He wants to destigmatize cancer, ensuring his daughter and others grow up knowing that cancer doesn't define a person's identity or determine their fate.
"I resonate with Sherlock's tenacity and outlook on life. He won't let anything control him, and that's an important message. We need to desensitize the word 'cancer' and ensure people know it's not the end."
You can listen to Brett's powerful narration on the "Part of the Story" campaign page. His story is a reminder that cancer is just a part of the story, not the whole story, of someone's life.
