Despite a second defeat, Hive BC's rising star shines bright!
Hive BC, one of the newest additions to the Unrivaled league, is facing some growing pains. With a roster of fresh faces, the team is still finding its footing, as evidenced by their recent losses to the Mist and the Breeze. But amidst these challenges, a young talent is emerging as a force to be reckoned with.
In their second game, Hive BC showed signs of improvement, especially on the defensive end. Enter Saniya Rivers, the standout player who anchored the team's defense with an incredible performance. She amassed an impressive six blocks and two steals, leading all players in the league so far this season. This achievement is even more remarkable when compared to Alanna Smith's five blocks in the Mist's season opener.
Rivers is no stranger to defensive excellence. Her accolades include being named to the ACC All-Defensive Team in consecutive years (2024 and 2025), and her skills seamlessly transitioned to the WNBA, where she led all rookies and guards in blocks during her debut season. With 38 total blocks, she surpassed even seasoned veterans, with only Skylar Diggins coming close with 35 blocks.
Rivers' physical attributes and instincts make her a defensive powerhouse. Her height, quickness, and athleticism, combined with her defensive prowess, position her as a future All-Defensive team member. Despite being a rookie, she was in contention for this recognition, but veteran players took the spotlight in the voting process.
As Rivers continues to develop, her presence in the league's defensive discussions will become more prominent. If she maintains her stellar play, she could even challenge for the Unrivaled Defensive Player of the Year award. However, the lack of team success might hinder her chances for individual honors, sparking a debate: Should individual awards consider team performance?
