Cadiz Chooses Continuity with GFL: Trash Collection Contract Renewed, but Not Without Debate
Cadiz residents won’t see any interruption in their trash collection—at least not anytime soon. In a decision that’s stirring a bit of local discussion, the Cadiz City Council voted to extend its existing franchise agreement with GFL Environmental for garbage collection services within city limits.
The decision came Monday evening during a specially called meeting at City Hall. According to City Administrative Officer Jack Lingenfelter, the council spent time reviewing competing proposals from two providers: GFL, the current contractor, and Republic Waste out of Mayfield. After comparing the bids, council members decided to stick with GFL, noting that the difference in monthly residential service fees between the two companies was minimal. But here’s where it gets interesting—Lingenfelter mentioned that there was some variation in commercial rates, leaving a small point of contention that could spark further debate about cost fairness for local businesses.
The newly approved franchise agreement with GFL is set for three years, officially taking effect on May 1, 2026. This long-term extension suggests confidence in GFL’s reliability, but it also raises a question: Should local councils prioritize consistency with existing contractors, or should they push harder for potentially lower-cost newcomers?
In addition to the trash contract vote, the council also gave the green light to an annexation ordinance for the Cadiz RV Park, located off Rocky Ridge Road. Lingenfelter explained that before this annexation becomes official, the ordinance must first be publicly advertised. The Cadiz-Trigg County Planning Commission must then hold a public hearing and adjust zoning regulations for the affected property. Only after these steps are complete will the RV park formally become part of the city’s incorporated area.
And this is the part most people overlook: annexations like this one can have far-reaching implications for local taxes, utilities, and emergency response services. Some residents may see it as smart urban growth, while others might question whether it stretches city resources too thin.
