Get ready for an epic comeback story! Cameron Smith is on a mission to win his first Australian Open title, and he's got the momentum to make it happen.
While Smith (-12) is currently two shots behind leader Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen, he's not alone in the hunt. Korean Si Woo Kim and Mexican Carlos Ortiz are also tied for second place, and Australians Adam Scott and Min Woo Lee (-10) are still very much in the game.
"It's been a while since I've had this feeling," Smith shared with reporters at Royal Melbourne. "I'm looking forward to tomorrow and the chance to get back into form. It would be a great way to silence a few critics."
But here's where it gets controversial... Smith's recent form has been a topic of discussion, especially after he missed the cut at the Australian PGA Championship last weekend. Some are questioning whether his move to the LIV golf league has impacted his performance.
However, Smith's stunning chip-in eagle at the par 5 14th was a highlight, delighting the crowds who braved the Melbourne weather.
And this is the part most people miss... Min Woo Lee and Adam Scott are also key players to watch. Lee recovered from a rough start to finish the day on -10, and Scott, fresh off a T6 finish at the Aus PGA, is only four shots behind Neergaard-Petersen going into the final round.
Over 30,000 fans surrounded the course, witnessing another thrilling performance by Rory McIlroy. The Masters champion made four birdies on the back nine, including the last two holes, but he'll need a course record-breaking round on Sunday to have a chance at lifting the trophy.
McIlroy's day had its fair share of ups and downs, including a bizarre moment where he had to play a shot from a banana peel after an errant drive. He went on to make a double bogey, but he's not giving up hope.
"I feel like I played well after that initial mistake. I got a feel for the course and played the back nine well. I just need to figure out how to make more birdies on the front," McIlroy told reporters.
As for Neergaard-Petersen, he's on a high after surging to the top of the leaderboard with four birdies in his final five holes. The PGA Tour-bound Dane has had an impressive year in Europe and is determined to finish strong.
"I'm really happy with how I finished," he said. "I've been able to maintain my focus and finish well in the last few events, and I want to continue that momentum."
Another player to watch is Jack Buchanan, currently ranked 740th in the world. The young Australian shot a remarkable seven-under 64 in Round 3, rocketing into contention. Starting Round 4 on seven under par, he's just six shots off the lead.
"I knew I was playing well enough to go low today," Buchanan said. "I think I can still go low tomorrow. It's all about managing your ball well on this course."
