In a heartfelt and inspiring social media post, WWE superstar Alex Shelley has opened up about his educational journey and the profound impact of leadership figures in wrestling. Shelley's decision to return to Franklin University for his third degree in Exercise Science is a testament to his commitment to self-improvement and a reminder of the importance of continuous learning.
But here's where it gets controversial... Shelley credits WWE's athlete-friendly policies, particularly their tuition reimbursement program, for enabling him to pursue further education. He highlights an interview with John Cena, where Cena discussed WWE's support for talent development, including funding for language learning and returning to school. Shelley observes, "Wrestling has become more athlete-friendly... We now have access to benefits and amenities that were previously unavailable."
When it comes to leadership in wrestling, Shelley takes us on a journey through the various "generations" he's been a part of. He identifies key figures who defined the locker rooms he inhabited: CM Punk on the independent circuit, AJ Styles in TNA/Impact Wrestling, and Hiroshi Tanahashi in New Japan Pro-Wrestling. Interestingly, despite not working extensively with John Cena, Shelley names him as the leader during his time in WWE.
"John Cena was the leader, but I didn't get to work with him as much as the other three," Shelley admits. Yet, he emphasizes that Cena's influence is undeniable, as he leads by example. Shelley uses Cena as a case study, showing how role models can inspire even when not directly working together.
"That's what leading by example is - you don't have to know them personally." Shelley concludes by labeling Cena as the "Greatest of All Time" (GOAT) due to his unwavering work ethic and contributions to the company.
